Lazar House part of Heritage Open Day this Sunday – 900 years of history!

The Assist Trust base of Lazar House will be open this coming Sunday (11th September) as part of the Heritage Open Day event that is taking place across the country.

Lazar House is a significantly historic building in Norwich (219, Sprowston Road, NR3 4HX, situated on the corner of Gilman Road) as it dates back to the 12th century.

Built by Herbert de Losinga originally as a Leper Hospital for the City of Norwich, Lazar House has had a variety of uses since then; as a dovecote, a barn and as a branch library, before the Assist Trust took residence in 2004.

Come and have a look round the well preserved interior and enjoy a cream tea at the same time – opening times are between 11am and 3pm.

Warhammer, a local gaming group that uses Lazar House every Tuesday evening, will also have a display of miniatures of Star Wars and Marvel characters!

Record numbers at Assist Open Day!!

By some miracle, our Open Day was blessed with wonderful weather right through the whole day (OK, the sun was of the hazy variety but we weren’t complaining), right up until the last bit of bunting was taken down and we all headed wearily to our cars – when the heavens opened!

Many, many thanks to the staff and members who worked so hard on the day and in preparation for the whole event, we had lots of people saying how well tended the Gardens were and especially how good the member’s own plots were looking.

A special mention should go to the children from Angel Road School and to Sue Graham, their music teacher, who played Steel Band music throughout the day and helped to create a wonderfully relaxed and happy atmosphere. Their playing was interspersed with performances from Assist members and staff, firstly performing some Zumba routines and later a piece practised as part of sessions that have taken place at Assist supported by Garage staff.

These Open Days just get better and better each year, so well done to everyone who helped make it such a success this time round. We took over £1,500 on the day as well, which will all be spent on improving facilities and equipment at the Gardens, so that more members can enjoy it long into the future.
