Communication at Assist Trust
At The Assist Trust we are committed to making a difference in the lives of adults with learning disabilities. Our mission revolves around empowering individuals to lead more independent and fulfilling lives. One of the key pillars of our work is building communication skills, as effective communication is fundamental to independence.
Communication is a foundational human need, and for individuals with learning disabilities it can be a bridge to greater independence. Many adults with learning disabilities face unique challenges when it comes to expressing themselves and understanding others and so we have a dedicated Communications Team to create strategies for our members. We recognise that each person’s journey is unique which is why we tailor our approach to meet individual needs.
One of the innovative ways our Communications Team support our members is by creating individualised Talking Mats. These mats serve as powerful tools for communication. They consist of visual symbols that help people express their thoughts, preferences, and feelings. By using Talking Mats we empower our members to communicate effectively, enabling them to make choices, share their thoughts, and be actively involved in decisions that affect their lives.
In addition to Talking Mats, we also promote the use of sign language. Sign Along is an inclusive communication method that combines speech with sign language to enhance understanding and also provides simple signs for words and letters. This approach provides individuals with learning disabilities a means to express themselves more clearly and confidently.
At the Assist Trust we understand that progress in communication is a journey, not a destination. Our dedicated staff work closely with each individual, assessing their needs and tailoring communication strategies to their unique strengths. These take the form of Communication Profiles which are updated annually.
Our ultimate goal is to empower individuals with learning disabilities to lead more independent lives. Improved communication skills open doors to better relationships, increased self-confidence, and enhanced decision making abilities. We firmly believe that everyone has the right to be heard and understood, and we are committed to making that a reality for each person we work with.
