Employment Stories
The Members Committee group have been finding out a little more about some of the work experience and paid work placements, which some of our members have at Assist Trust. They spoke to Susan, Sarah, Ryan and Thomas.
Here is what they had to say…
Susan: ‘I work as a catering assistant in a school. This is a paid job, 10 hours a week, 2 hours a day. I’ve been there for 12 weeks. I was so pleased to get my first months’ pay, I put some of it in my savings account. I’m thinking about what I’m going to save up for. I like working as part of a team. I don’t just do the washing up – I serve food and do other jobs. One week it was putting the sausages in the buns!
I had to do a food hygiene course and learn the bus routes – I come into Assist first but go straight home when I’ve finished work. The employment team at Assist helped me with all this, and helped me prepare for the job interview. I’d done some work experience and worked at Assist’s Norman centre café, all this helped me get the job.’
Sarah: ’I’ve started working at a community post office, this is voluntary work. I’ve only been there a couple of weeks but ‘m really enjoying it. I use the till, sell stamps and cards, I’m learning about different sorts of post and where the stickers go, and counting out change as well. I have to put different letters in different bags. I’ve learned new bus routes to get to my placement, and there’s been a couple of hiccups as the buses haven’t always been on time. I’m very pleased to be doing something different’.
Ryan: ‘The employment team are looking for more employment for me. I’m ready and keen to start something new. I was expecting to start a paid job a few years ago but that didn’t happen because of COVID. I then had a voluntary placement doing gardening at Age Concern. This was really good but finished because they moved somewhere where there wasn’t a garden. I’m waiting for something else to crop up – I like being outside and I’m not afraid of hard work!’
Thomas:’ I go gardening at the church on Wednesdays. I go straight there from my house and come to Assist afterwards. I’ve been doing this job for a couple of years and I enjoy it. There is another member form Assist who goes there as well’.
